Beware Domain Registry of America

Posted 07/19/2010 - 03:02 by Brian Myrick

Yesterday, I received an email from a client and friend asking a simple question about a bill he received in the mail from Domain Registry of America (DRA). His question was should he pay for one year for $30 or for five years for $95.

The problem is, He didn't buy his domain from them, and as his service provider, I had already paid his renewal with his real registrar - for $10 per year.

Much Ado About Flash

Posted 05/14/2010 - 09:12 by Brian Myrick

The interwebs are all atwitter about Apple and Flash duking it out over Flash on Mobile Safari. Much can be read about it, so I'm not going to link to anything here - just Google it.

What I do want to say about it is - big deal. Get back to work.

Apple's position is essentially: Flash doesn't run well on mobile devices.

Adobe's position is essentially: You don't have the full web unless you have Flash.

iPad 3G in the car

Posted 05/02/2010 - 14:08 by Brian Myrick

Here are some cool things I was able to do with my iPad while riding in the car (riding - not driving).

1. Stream a Netflix movie. The quality isn't as good as when on WiFi but performance was good. It wasn't jittery and the audio didn't get out of sync. Certainly not high def, but definitely watchable.

2. Type this blog.

iPad 3G

Posted 05/02/2010 - 09:44 by Brian Myrick

I waited for the 3G version of the iPad, and mine arrived Friday - on launch day. There are a zillion reviews and comparisons out there (appleinsider.com is a good place to look), so I won't remark about

Instead I'll make a few comments about my impressions so far:

1. Performance of the device is amazing. I'll let you know about 3G performance later today as I'll be using it on a long car ride today.

What's in a name?

Posted 04/09/2010 - 17:35 by Brian Myrick

Apple makes great products, but I don't think they always make great names. In fact, they are confusing.

The iPhone: This name makes a little bit of sense because Apple likes to stick a little "i" in front of almost everything (iMac, iLife, iWork, iPod, iBook). So if they are going to make a phone, call it the iPhone.

The iPod Touch: This is the name of the iPhone that isn't a phone. Its way more than an iPod. In fact, the iPod Touch runs almost all of the 135,000 apps in the iTunes App Store.

iPhone OS: Multitasking & iAd are huge updates

Posted 04/09/2010 - 12:16 by Brian Myrick

Yesterday, Apple hosted a developer preview for iPhone OS 4. They went through what they called "7 tent poles" of OS 4. Of the 7, I think 2 are very significant:

Brief Insight Into Why Microsoft Lost It's Way

Posted 03/11/2010 - 16:28 by Brian Myrick

Tandy Trower has an article published on Technologizer about his involvement as Product Manager for Microsoft Windows 1.0. In it, he recounts the story of how he became involved with Windows, what Microsoft was like in the "early" days and how Windows came to be.

At the time, Mr. Trower's boss was then head of Microsoft's product marketing group, Steve Ballmer. Balmer had already fired 4 previous head's of the Windows project when Trower took over.

Project Inbox Zero

Like many of you, I have a tumultuous relationship with email. I get a couple of thousand emails per week - that's how many I get that I don't consider spam, but it does include marketing emails that I perceive as permitted - iTunes Classical Music Spotlight or Sports Boosters Event notices. (We use and recommend Red Condor for AntiSpam.)
